Robert van Westing - Managing Director, Hundt Consult B.V.
Every day in the Netherlands, more than 100,000 elevators go up and down. But what happens when those elevators start to malfunction, get stuck, or need to be replaced? Hundt Consult ensures that vertical transportation remains safe, reliable, efficient, and affordable. Whether it's elevators in offices, residential complexes, libraries, or fire stations.
Robert van Westing - Managing Director
What began over 50 years ago as a German elevator manufacturer has evolved into a leading consultancy in vertical transportation. Since 2020, under the leadership of Robert van Westing, Hundt Consult has also made its mark in the Benelux region, offering a fresh perspective on elevators.
"The elevator industry is surprisingly dynamic," says Van Westing. "No day is the same: one moment I'm discussing technical details with a technician, the next moment I'm strategizing with a procurement department for the years ahead. It's constantly shifting, but that's what makes it incredibly fun and challenging."
Where can you find us?
"We no longer build elevators, but you can find us wherever elevators, escalators, and facade lifts need to function properly. We assist property owners with projects, complex issues, and the maintenance and management of their installations in the Benelux region. Our clients are diverse: from nationally recognized e-commerce companies and municipalities to housing associations, nursing homes, and theaters. So, chances are you've already come across us without even realizing it!"
What sets Hundt Consult apart from other consultancy firms in the elevator industry?
"We are ahead in digital market trends, more proactive in management, and delve deeper into technical details, which sets us apart in the industry. Our digital platform, LiftManager 4.0, provides us with real-time insights into every installation, including warranty periods on components. With our 'best in class' lift management, we not only ensure that clients always comply with regulations, but also save them time and costs."
Can you provide a concrete example of a cost-saving?
"Recently, a client received a quote of 80,000 euros for elevator modernization. Thanks to our advice and technical expertise, we strengthened the client's position, enabling the project to be executed for significantly less money and with better quality. The client was highly satisfied and said, 'With you on board, I not only saved money, but I was fully taken care of, the project was completed entirely and on time.' That added value is exactly what drives me."
You emphasize innovation. What does that look like in practice?
"In addition to our platform that tracks all activities such as maintenance, inspections, or breakdowns, we use sensors for remote monitoring. This allows us to see if an elevator is in use, assess the quality of door movement, track the number of rides an elevator takes, and adjust maintenance accordingly. This not only reduces costs but also minimizes breakdowns. The data we collect is immediately translated into practical advice, providing double benefits for our clients!"
Is digitalization a trend in the elevator sector?
"Absolutely. Digitalization and efficiency are crucial, especially due to a shortage of technicians. Our approach and technology ensure that quality is transparent, technicians spend less time on unnecessary maintenance visits, and can focus on where they are truly needed."
Hundt Consult has German roots. Do you notice that in the company culture?
"Not in the traditional way you might expect. We are very entrepreneurial, flexible, and open. If I see an opportunity tomorrow, I have the full freedom from the parent company to pursue it. This entrepreneurship, combined with the technical expertise and back-office support from my colleagues, is a perfect blend that adds value and supports our clients."
What are your ambitions for Hundt Consult in the Netherlands?
“We aim to grow into a fully-fledged office with around ten employees. We are a startup with numerous projects, acquisition and portfolio management, and a call center, enabling us to respond quickly to incidents. The potential is enormous. We see a growing demand for our proactive approach and technical expertise.”
Why should someone consider working with you now?
“If you enjoy independence, variety, technical challenges, and a fresh approach to technical elevator consulting, then this is the place to be. You have the opportunity to truly build something within a small, dynamic organization with the stability of an established international company as its foundation. You have the freedom to take initiative, without ever feeling like you're on your own.”
